Watch Hennessey Push The Dodge Demon To Its Limit

Witness the awesome acceleration of the mighty Dodge Demon.

Sadly, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon won’t be renewed for the 2019 model year, making its limited 3,300 examples all the more desirable. Thanks to its 6.2-liter Hemi V8 engine delivering 840 horsepower, the Demon can accelerate to 60 mph in an astonishing 2.3 seconds and set a 9.65-second quarter-mile time when running on racing fuel. Still, Hennessey Performance thinks it can take the Demon to another level.

As if the Demon weren't already extreme enough, the Texas-based tuner is working on an upgrade package that will when the upgrade goes on sale early this year. In the meantime, Hennessey recently took the Demon to the drag strip to test its top speed in preparation for its upcoming upgrades.

The Hellcat-powered Challenger tops out at around 200 mph, so you'd expect the more powerful Demon to easily beat that. However, Dodge has fitted an electronic speed limiter to the Demon that . Pushed to its limit, the Demon manages 164 mph in Hennessey's care. Considering the Demon has over 800 horses on tap, a 168-mph top speed doesn’t seem very impressive. For reference, the tops out at around 180 mph. Don’t forget, though, the Demon was primarily designed to dominate the drag strip and set blistering quarter-mile times, which the Demon effectively demonstrated in Hennessey’s video.

The acceleration is brutal: it takes a mere 20 seconds for the Demon to hit 164 mph on camera. Unsurprisingly, it guzzles copious amounts of fuel in that time, too; just watch the fuel gauge plummet. Even as it reaches the limiter, the Demon clearly isn't showing its true potential. Unfortunately, the muscle car's drag radials prevent it from safely going any faster. Theoretically, though, fitted with high performance tires, the Demon could probably do 200 mph with the limiter removed. We can’t help but wonder what the Demon’s top speed and 0-60 mph time will be after Hennessey is finished with it, but we look forward to finding out.
