The Toyota 86 GT: The Comfortable Trim We Supposedly Wanted

No, it's not the European arrival of the GT86.

According to , Toyota will soon launch a new "GT" trim of its 86 that will come equipped with features making it more comfortable for daily driving. Yes, this will be called the 86 GT. Over in Europe, ironically, the 86 has always been called the GT86. Europe has the GT86, America the 86 GT. So, what will the American market 86 GT offer? Heated seats with a new leather upholstery, steering with contrast stitching and audio controls, and a parking brake handle with that same stitch theme.

Dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, an anti-theft device, and a 4.2-inch display with a g-force meter, tachometer, torque output and temperature readouts complete the list of interior upgrades. Meanwhile, the exterior will see the addition of LED fog lights and, as the order guide states, an “underbody aerodynamic panel,” which sounds like some type of front splitter. Styling wise, there are body-color accents and a GT Black which, quite obviously, adds Raven Black accents to the mirror caps and rear wing supports. No changes to the 2.0-liter Boxer four are planned. As far as pricing, the 86 GT will begin at $29,280 (including $895 destination fee) for the six-speed manual version.

Opting for the six-speed automatic adds $720. Even with these upgrades, which will certainly be welcomed by some, its Subaru BRZ twin already offers these comfort features – and for less money, totaling $28,465, which includes $820 destination. Pictures shown are of the 2017 Toyota GT86.
