Yes. This is really happening.
For some reason that probably only makes sense to him, the president of Turkmenistan, Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, has reportedly decided to ban all black cars in the country’s capital, Ashgabat, as of this month. and the have reported the news which, if you look at the recent history of Turkmenistan and black cars, isn’t all that surprising. In 2015, the same president ended the importation of black cars, so this is logically the next step, right?
Yes, if you think in the same odd way Berdymukhamedov apparently does. What has the guy got against black cars? Well, no official reason has been given, but the “white color is supposed to be lucky.” In fact, some black cars owners recently discovered their cars went missing earlier this month. Turns out they were towed to police impound lots. In order to get them back, owners were forced to sign a document agreeing to repaint their cars in a lighter color. We couldn’t make this up even if we tried. Not at all surprisingly, local car repair shops are making some serious money right now as people with dark cars are rushing to get them resprayed.
They obviously don't want to wake up one morning and find their car impounded. However, in some cases, these repair shops are now charging twice the average person’s monthly salary, less than $500, to do the job. Welcome to life in a former Soviet satellite state.
