Last November, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus unveiled the to the world. At the time, SCG claimed that the SCG004S would be powered by a twin-turbo 5.0-liter V8 engine with 650 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque on tap, but reports that this is no longer the case. Instead, the American supercar will utilize the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo VR38DETT V6 as the Nissan GT-R. But while it may have lost two cylinders, the GT-R engine powering the SCG004S has been tuned to deliver a whopping 690 horsepower.
That means the American supercar will have 40 more ponies than the initially announced 5.0-liter V8 – and that’s just the entry-level version. A high-performance package will offer even more power, which will be sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. A paddle-shift automatic transmission will also be offered as an option. The GT-R, on the other hand, is offered exclusively with a paddle-shift dual-clutch transmission. Company founder James Glickenhaus explained that the engine was changed because the Nissan unit was “lighter” and “practically bulletproof.”
Unsurprisingly, the engine will also be used in the upcoming racing version of the SCG004S, which will compete at the 2019 Nurburgring 24 Hours, while a race-prepped road version will handle the journey to and from the circuit. “I will drive the car to the track and we’ll stick a race engine in it,” he said. “We’re doing it like they used to.” Don’t think the road-going SCG004S is any less extreme than its race car counterpart, however. Featuring a carbon fiber chassis and weighing just 1,179 kg, the SCG004S road car has an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 585 hp per ton – that’s 85 hp more per tonne than the McLaren 720S.
Testing of the SCG004S will begin in a few months before customer deliveries start before the end of the year. Only 250 examples will be produced every year, each with a starting price of $400,000.
