The retired NBA shooting guard shows off his custom Levante in New York.
As the rich get richer, luxury automakers are doing everything they can to cater to the needs of the wealthy, many of whom want their ride to stand out in the country club parking lot. This has led to an influx of personalization programs, like BMW’s and Lamborghini’s . Maserati is joining the fray, showing off a new GTS One Of One at the 2019 New York Auto Show. However, this Levante isn’t customized by just anyone-its the creation of 10-time NBA All-Star Ray Allen, who worked closely with Maserati to craft his ideal vision.
According the Maserati, the two-time NBA champion sought to capture his love for the city of Miami, where he spent the final three years of his career and won a championship with the Miami Heat, with his design. To this end, Allen had the Levante coated in a matte "Blu Astro” tri-coat paint, which Maserati says was "inspired by the astral blue color of the galaxy” and "the colors of the magical city of Miami.” Allen also opted for carbon fiber sideview mirror covers and door handles, while chrome coats the air vents, grille, exhaust tips, and badges. The Hall of Fame shooting guard chose 22-inch diamond rims in dark chrome and had the brake calipers painted in the same matte "Blu Astro.”
Inside, Allen went with a very unique look, covering the instrument panel, center console, door panels, and seats in a blue-denim-inspired leather, created using a special process that uses aniline-dye with vegetable tanning. The color of the leather will change its appearance over time, similar to denim, the interior a unique character. The interior is scattered with bits of carbon fiber trim with blue thread woven in, a material unique to Allen’s Levante. Maserati Centro Stile also crafted special floor mats for Allen’s one-off, using a textile that took inspiration from the strings of a basketball net and a closed-cell foam made from polyolefin resins called XL Extralight. This form is incredibly light, antibacterial, and is visually inspired by the soles of sneakers, a motif that references Allen’s time on the court. Finally, Allen’s signature is stitched behind the driver’s headrest, and the backlit door sill inserts read "for Ray.”
