The sports car from Stuttgart reminds everyone who’s king of the castle.
Porsche has been aggressively working out the new 911 during industry test pool sessions at the Nurburgring, and rumor has it that a has followed its turbocharged sibling below the seven-minute Nordschleife barrier. According to , the RS recently laid down a scintillating series of laps all of which were below seven minutes, with the fastest clocking in around 6:56. If legitimate, that would make it a full second faster than the 918 Spyder hypercar, but nine seconds slower than the GT2 RS.
Based on the helmet it looks like Porsche’s internal hot-shoe, Lars Kern, is once again at the controls. Kern was the madman responsible for the GT2 RS' record-setting run back in September.
No word on if the GT3 set its time on stock Michelin rubber, but much like its turbocharged twin, the generates gobs of mechanical grip through Porsche's legendary suspension wizardry, and by virtue of having a flat-six engine hanging out behind the rear axle. The latest version of the venerable 911 is motivated by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine good for 512-hp and 346 lb-ft of torque. The fact that it broke the seven-minute barrier without the help of forced induction is kind of absurd compared to the company surrounding it.
Not to mention, the all-American Corvette ZR1 and its 755-hp supercharged V8 is struggling to even get below 7:10, which may or may not be a result of the massive amounts of drag being cast by its gargantuan rear wing. The 2019 will start at $188,550, including destination, a further $18,000 for the Weissach Package, and another $13,000 for the magnesium wheels. No one ever said speed was cheap.
