The hybrid setup was first shown in the stunning Mercedes-AMG GT Concept at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
Cast your mind back to the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, and you’ll remember the reveal of the , which previewed the production AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The stunning concept was a 805-hp super sedan powered by AMG’s signature 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 and an electric motor. Sadly, this setup wasn’t carried over to the production AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, but company boss Tobias Moers has confirmed it will eventually power a future road-going AMG car.
Speaking to , Moers didn’t go into specifics, but confirmed the hybrid V8 engine will go into production "one day." "Maybe you remember the GT concept from Geneva last year," said Moers. "It had a V8 engine in the front and an electric motor on the rear axle. Everything is in development. It will go into production one day." Moers went on to say that Mercedes-AMG will develop its own battery pack for the engine to make sure it’s as light as possible. Carbon fiber could also be used extensively to increase stiffness and keep weight down. Moers also assures the hybrid setup will still produce an aggressive exhaust note, so it will still sound like a true AMG.
If you run (12 miles) in electric mode, then maybe it’s okay to have your freedom and it’s quiet. We’re not fully done with it, though," said Moers. "We do a lot of research together with companies, musicians, gaming people to find what could be the right sound for an electric-driven AMG. We’re not done with that journey; we’re just collecting a lot of input." In addition to hybrid systems and fully-electric cars, AMG is also planning to develop electric turbochargers for its gasoline engines. This technology will be working its way down from AMG’s flagship Project One hypercar and has already been applied to performance crossovers like the Audi SQ 7.
