Hyundai Says Electrified Versions Of The Santa Fe Are On The Way

The Korean seven-seater is about to get more efficient.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is , bringing with it a bold new look for the brand. Although the face is new, the 185-horsepower 2.4-liter inline four cylinder GDI engine and 232-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder aren't exactly revolutionary. These engines have been found in plenty of other Hyundai/Kia models, but Hyundai does have plans to introduce something new with the Santa Fe. Speaking to at the SUV's launch in Spain, Hyundai confirmed two new electrified engine options for the Santa Fe.

In the UK, the Santa Fe is only offered with a 2.2-liter diesel engine, but the Hyundai and Kia brands have promised to introduce . The first electrified Santa Fe will be a mild hybrid, which will likely share a drivetrain with the Tucson hybrid (not sold in the US). The Tucson hybrid uses uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 183 hp, mated to a 16-hp electric motor. Details of the plug-in hybrid Santa Fe are limited, and Hyundai executives remain tight lipped. The Sonata Plug-In Hybrid's 202-hp drivetrain could be a potential option, and can achieve an electric range of 27 miles.

It also remains to be seen whether or not the two electrified Santa Fe models will come to the US. Hyundai does sell a few hybrid and plug-in hybrid models here, and we think the Santa Fe hybrid would sell well in the US. Hopefully the company agrees with us.
