Think luxury rather than lap times.
Not long after the , McLaren recently revealed a that will sit alongside the P1. Codenamed the BP23, McLaren’s three-seater hyper-gt will be the fastest road car the manufacturer has ever produced – surpassing the 903-horsepower P1 is no mean feat. It will also adopt a central driving position, which has spawned inevitable comparisons to the iconic F1 hypercar. Speaking to , McLaren boss Mike Flewitt clarified that the BP23 is not a direct a successor to the F1.
“The P1 is the successor to the F1, and in a few years there will be a successor to the P1,” he confirmed. Could he be referring to McLaren’s upcoming ? McLaren is positioning the BP23 as a luxury grand-tourer, rather than a track car designed to set blistering lap times. “The BP23 won’t be the fastest round a track. It’s not a track car. It’s a luxury hyper-GT,” he said. Consequently, that means the BP23’s 0-62 mph time won’t be faster than the P1’s 2.8 second sprint time. Without all-wheel-drive, the BP23 won’t be able to beat that time according to Flewitt. He was also keen to avoid comparisons with the . “We’re not doing a Chiron here. It has to be a McLaren.”
Coupled with a lighter and more powerful battery, the BP23 will be powered by the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine found in the 720S, making it the fastest McLaren ever. “There are many definitions of fastest,” he said, keen to manage expectations. “Could be fastest from 100-200mph… it is very powerful and has very low drag.” Only 106 examples are being produced just like the F1, with deliveries due to start in 2019. But if you want one, you’re out of luck because they’re all sold out. When pressed if any other iterations of the BP23 later down the line, Flewitt made it clear that it will be an exclusive one-off. “There will be no spiders or track versions. That’s it.”
