Just look at the vents it'll need to keep that supercharged V8 from overheating.
Ford keeps rolling out new versions of the Mustang. But the one we've been looking forward to most is . And this is our best look at it yet. Set to slot in above the GT350, the new GT500 is expected to adopt the same 5.2-liter V8 – but supercharged to take on the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. And to that end, it's expected to pack over 700 horsepower. But given the Mustang's superior chassis, it ought to run circles around the Hellcat – however they compare on the drag strip.
This solitary preview image was released to , showing the upcoming Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 from above. And the most revealing part is the deeply sculpted hood, with big black heat extractor vents in the middle to help keep that high-strung engine operating at optimal temperature. The fenders look wider, too. And beyond the hood, we can make out a big front splitter and rear wing to help keep it planted to the tarmac. That part will be crucial in getting all that muscle down to the tires, which – no matter how wide and sticky – are likely to spin without the added help.
It's hard to tell from peering through the rear glass whether it'll retain the standard pony car's rear seats, or ditch them like . Neither would surprise us, but we can expect the GT500 to make as much use of that track model's upgrades as possible. The bigger question is Ford will use to transmit the top Stang's power to the rear wheels. Driving enthusiasts will undoubtedly hope for an old-school stick shift with three pedals, but Dearborn could very well opt for a quicker-shifting automatic of some sort – whether it's the ten-speed torque-converter slush-box or a seven-speed dual-clutch unit.
We'll have to wait a while longer to find out one way or another, along with all the other specs. But you can bet the new Shelby will make up for lost time once it's ready. In the meantime, check out the new image from above, the front teaser released previously, and a smattering of other hardcore Mustang shots to whet your appetite for what's to come.
