Your favorite crazy people at Porsche may be gunning to break the Nurburgring’s 30-year-old lap record. After smashing the lap record at Spa, Porsche is now hinting that it will attempt to set another lap record, with the evidence seemingly pointing to the fabled Nordschleife. The new video simply shows the Hybrid Evo undergoing stringent evaluation at Porsche's wind tunnel in Weissach, Germany. However, the company does say it will do a demo lap at the Nordschleife before the 24-hour race there on May 12.
Porsche currently holds the overall lap record around the Nordschleife after Stefan Bellof drove a Porsche 956 around in a staggering 6:11.13 during qualifying for the 1983 1,000 KM Nürburgring race. Just to compare, the latest 911 GT2 RS is the fastest road-legal car to lap the Green Hell with a 6:47.25. For those unfamiliar, the Hybrid Evo takes the highly successful and now retired LMP1 racecar and modifies it beyond what FIA World Endurance Championship rules allow. It’s been given a new front diffuser and rear wing featuring a hydraulically controlled drag-reduction system, a revised floor with side skirts, which is good for a 53-percent increase in downforce and a 66-percent improvement in efficiency.
The car makes in excess of 1,000 horsepower thanks to a 2.0-liter turbocharged V4 engine good for 710 horsepower and two energy recovery systems that provide a further 434 hp. Air conditioning, windshield wiper, race control communication system, and the pneumatic jacks have all been thrown by the wayside to save weight. It even gets special tires from Michelin for improved grip. Regardless of whether Porsche actually takes the Hybrid Evo around the Nurburgring with intention or not, the company will certainly take down lap records elsewhere. The car is scheduled to head to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK and the Porsche Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca this fall.
