Following its reveal at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, Aston Martin’s first-ever EV enjoys dynamic debut.
Last month, Aston Martin finally . Shortly after its world debut, the Rapide E recently made its dynamic debut at the Monaco racing circuit during the Formula E Monaco ePrix to show what it can do.
Taking part in two dedicated on-track sessions throughout the day, the Rapide E was put to the test by Aston Martin works driver and three-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Darren Turner. Aston Martin says the electric supercar "didn’t disappoint as it showcased its performance credentials on the circuit."
The Rapide E is the most powerful version of the Rapide sedan yet, thanks to the twin, rear-mounted electric motors that deliver a combined output of 604 hp and 701 lb-ft of instant torque. Power is provided by an 800V electrical architecture battery with a 65kWh capacity using over 5,600 lithium-ion 18650 format cylindrical cells. This bespoke battery pack lies where the original 6.0-liter V12, gearbox and fuel tank were located, with the 800V system allowing for "more efficient charging and greatly improved thermal characteristics over existing electrical architectures”.
"The car has the kind of torque and punch that you’d expect from an EV, but they’ve really worked hard to retain the dynamic characteristics of what makes an Aston Martin special,” said Darren Turner. "Today feels like a real milestone in this company’s history and for me to be the first person to drive an all-electric Aston Martin publicly is an absolute honor, particularly here in Monaco,” the racing driver added.
Production of the Aston Martin Rapide E is limited to just 155 limits, with production taking place at in Q4 2019. According to Aston Martin, the last allocations are currently available for the Rapide E with pricing available on application, so it could sell out soon.
