Another piece of argument ammo for the “built not bought crowd.”
When you think about cars that dominate a drag strip, an SUV like the Nissan Patrol (what we get in America ) is likely the last four-wheeled object that comes to mind. After all, the Patrol is an SUV designed to conquer desert dunes and transport the family over rocky roads, not beat the world’s fastest hypercars in a drag race. Yet here we are in 2017 where a Tesla Model X can beat a Dodge Challenger Hellcat at the drag strip. What a time to be alive.
That’s what makes this matchup between a Nissan Patrol and the Porsche 918 all the more worthwhile. The Porsche makes 877 horsepower and weighs 3,692 pounds, a decent amount for a supercar but nowhere near the poundage that Patrol has. It checks in at 5,900-6,100 pounds when stock.
The key word here is stock, and that’s something that this Patrol certainly isn’t. Right off the bat it’s worth noting that it has its engine swapped with the V6 from a Nissan GT-R. Only this isn’t left stock either, with a handful of expensive modifications helping the Patrol pump out over 1,900 horsepower, or in other words, a not so subtle 1,023 horsepower more than the Porsche 918. The results are deafening, in a literal sense, because these two put on an impressive show all while Richard Hammond moans about his loss from behind the wheel of the Porsche. At first the Patrol looks inconspicuous until you spot the Hoosier drag tires strapped on. At least Hammond didn’t put his pink slip up for grabs.
