We check out the A35 AMG at the 2019 New York Auto Show.
If you want a compact Mercedes sports sedan but the is just a bit too curvy for you, fear not-Mercedes has another option. Despite occupying the same niche, the CLA35 AMG is now joined by the sedan, revealed alongside its sister vehicle at this year’s 2019 New York Auto Show.
Powered by the same 302 horsepower, 295 lb-ft of torque 2.0-liter inline-four, the A35 AMG sprints to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, just a tenth behind the CLA35. The A35 AMG acts as a competitor to the 288-hp Audi S3, and will slot beneath the upcoming A45 AMG which will battle the Audi RS3 around the 400 hp threshold. Despite producing more power and torque than the S3, which makes 280 lb-ft of torque, the S3 is actually a tenth quicker to 60 mph than the A35.
AMG added other performance upgrades, such as a retuned suspension, larger brakes at the front and rear, a reprogrammed seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and 4Matic all-wheel-drive as standard. There is also a reinforced body shell.
Visually, the A35 gets new 18 inch alloys, or optional 19-inch rims, and a revised grille and front bumper. Out back, there’s a lip spoiler, a small rear diffuser, and dual exhaust pipes. The interior gains a flat-bottomed steering wheel with leather grips, red topstitching, and an optional AMG Drive Unit controller for clicking between the five dynamic modes-Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport + and Individual. Galvanized shift paddles hide behind the beefier steering wheel, and an AMG digital instrument cluster is paired with the MBUX infotainment display with Track Pace telematics. Other interior upholstery options include a mix of microfiber and faux leather.
Prices are expected to be around $45k, and optional Aerodynamics and Night packages will be available to give the compact sports sedan some visual pizazz.
