New Mercedes C-Class facelift features new tech and more power.
First introduced in 2015, the current has been given a mid-life cycle refresh for the 2019 model year with increased power and new driver assists. Set to debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show next month, the refreshed C-Class features redesigned front and rear bumpers and is now equipped with LED headlamps and taillamps “defined by clear-lined contours” as standard. Overall, the styling changes are subtle while making the C-Class look more refined next to its larger S-Class sibling.
New Mojave Silver Metallic and Emerald Green Metallic are now available along with 17-inch twin 5-spoke wheels for the base model. The interior remains largely unchanged, apart from the addition of a new steering wheel with touch control. It’s on the technology front where you’ll find the more significant changes, however. As standard, the 2019 C-Class includes a keyless ignition with a push-button start button featuring a “new turbine-look design,” a power-retractable sunroof, wood trim, a 7.0-inch infotainment system, and automatic braking. If you want to add more luxuries, you can also opt for the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster from the S-Class.
Other options include a 10.25-inch infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, heated seats operated by voice control, a head-up display, NFC wireless charging, and a Burmester Premium sound system. On the technology front, the updated C-Class can be equipped with the latest driver assists available in the E-Class. In certaion situations, this allows the C-Class to drive semi-autonomously using improved camera and radar systems that monitors the traffic situation up to 1,640 feet ahead. Surroundings are scanned by a radar across a distance of up to 820 feet to the front, 130 feet to the sides, and 260 feet to the rear.
With the camera, a range of up to 1,640 feet is possible to the front, including 295 feet in 3D. The C-Class also uses map and navigation data for the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, which uses map information and predictively adjusts the speed when approaching corners or intersections. Other additions include an Active Steering Assist with updated Active Lane Change Assist and Active Emergency Stop Assist. Active Brake Assist is included as standard. In the US, the 2019 C-Class will go on sale later this year with a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The 2.0-liter unit produces 14 more horsepower than the outgoing model, bringing the power output to 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Gasoline, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants will be sold in Europe.
