2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan Is Big In China

Chinese market, long-wheelbase model previews A-Class sedan.

Mercedes-Benz today revealed its all-new A-Class sedan at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show in China, but the model shown here isn't the exact A-Class we'll see on our shores. For the Asian country, back-seat room is key, so its version of the A-Class, dubbed the A-Class L, receives an extra 2.4 inches of wheelbase length to stretch it out a bit. Aside from that and some simplified Chinese badges, this is what you should expect Mercedes-Benz to offer in America toward the end of this year.

Already revealed in hatchback form, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan will slot immediately below the CLA-Class in the model range to provide Mercedes-Benz a new entry-level compact. Hatchback and short-wheelbase sedan models will sport a 107.4-inch wheelbase, while the Chinese sedan will measure in with 109.8 inches between the axles. Up front, the sedan wears identical bodywork to the hatchback ahead of the A-pillar, where beneath its hood it hides of the company's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine—good for 221 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It will be available in front- and all-wheel-drive variants, just like the CLA. It will come with a seven-speed automatic.

The notchback sedan will also be available in more potent versions, including an with “around 300 horsepower,” while an A45 will also be available for those who want a high-horsepower screamer. Mercedes-Benz stated the A-Class in China will have a 14.8 cubic-foot trunk, which is unlikely to change for the US market. Expect the A-Class sedan for the United States to break cover during the second half of this year. Hatchback models go on sale globally next month.
