Looks like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo has a new rival.
The is a stylish SUV, but it leaves a lot to be desired in the performance department. Luckily, our prayers for a more powerful Levante were answered back in March with the . Further expanding Maserati’s SUV line-up is the new 2019 Levante GTS, which just made its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
It uses the same Ferrari-sourced 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 as the Trofeo, but the output has been reduced from 590 to 550 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque. That’s still a substantial upgrade over the standard 430-hp Levante. Maserati claims the GTS will do 0-62 mph in four seconds and hit a top speed of 181 mph, while the Trofeo will do the same sprint in 3.7 seconds and top out at 187 mph. Maserati says this represents “performance figures of a modern supercar disguised in a high-end SUV body.“ Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic, rear limited-slip differential, and rear-biased all-wheel-drive.
To handle this extra power, Maserati has tweaked the standard Levante’s standard. The Integrated Vehicle Control traction and stability control system has been programmed to improve the driving dynamics and road handling. The Levante’s adjustable air suspension has also been tuned and the brake package has been upgraded with six-piston calipers and 15-inch rotors at the front axle and 13-inch rotors at the rear. Distinguishing the sportier V8-powered Levantes, both the Trofeo and GTS feature a lower front fascia and rear bumper, with larger intakes and a wider rear end. A set of 20-inch wheels come as standard on the GTS, with 21- and 22-inch sizes also available.
Inside, the Levante GTS features a distinctive cabin. As standard, the GTS comes with a full leather interior, or optional full-grain Pieno Fiore natural leather upholstery, as well as sport pedals and a Harman Kardon Audio system with 14 speakers. The entire Levante range has also been updated. Adaptive Full LED Matrix headlights are now available as aan option and every model now comes with Integrated Vehicle Control as standard to improve stability. All Levante models have also inherited the gearshift from the Trofeo, which features a more intuitive shift pattern, shorter travel and improved operation.
Shifting the lever from right to left will allow the driver to manually change gears, while a new ‘P’ button effortlessly sets the transmission in parking mode. In addition, the infotainment system in the Levante, Ghibli and Quattroporte has been updated with new display graphics and improved climate control system ergonomics, and the luxurious Pieno Fiore leather option is also available in the Ghibli and Quattroporte in three different colors. As well as debuting the Levante GTS at Goodwood, Maserati will also be showcasing several , along with the GranTurismo MC and GranCabrio Sport. The Levante Trofeo is also making its European debut at the show.
