Could the Mercedes-AMG GT R Black Series make an appearance at the Frankfurt Auto Show?
Mercedes-AMG has yet to acknowledge the existence of the hardcore GT R Black Series, even though AMG boss Tobias Moers confirmed that it’s coming last year. At first glance, the car being put through its paces around the Nurburgring in this spy video appears to be an ordinary AMG GT R, but Mercedes isn’t fooling anyone. The AMG GT R Black Series was allegedly spotted being tested at the Nurburgring a few months ago, but this model is wearing far less camouflage as Mercedes-AMG prepares to take on the mighty Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
From the video, there are several signs that we’re not staring at the already-hardcore AMG GT R. Notably, the position of the exhausts has changed from the center to outboard positions within the diffuser – a similar setup to the AMG GT4 race car. Elsewhere, the manually adjustable rear wing looks the same, but the camouflage suggests that the liftgate has been revised.

This is possibly a result of the rear glass being replaced with a polycarbonate window to shed further weight in addition to the abundance of carbon fiber components. It’s probably no coincidence that the Porsche 911 GT2 RS also happens to have a plastic rear window, a car that Mercedes-AMG no doubt has in its sights as a rival for the GT R Black Series. Mercedes-AMG has yet to divulge when we can expect the GT R Black Series to break cover, but we may have to wait until 2018. Sources have suggested that it will pack over 600 hp compared to the current range-topping GT R that produces 577 hp. Here’s hoping it makes an appearance at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.
