Rumors suggest it will preview an upcoming Rolls-Royce Dawn rival.
Last week, you may remember Mercedes used its Instagram account to tease a mysterious new concept car bound for this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance which Chief Designer Gorden Wagener touted as “a big surprise” and “a new icon for the brand.” There were hints that its design was inspired by the futuristic-looking IAA concept, but details were very scarce other than that. Mercedes has followed up the Instagram post with an official video teasing its next Vision concept car, giving us a glimpse of some of its design features.

Little is shown in the brief video lasting around 30 seconds, but reports that the download link supplied by Mercedes was called “Mercedes Six concept,” suggesting that a new variant of the retro-inspired Maybach 6 Concept revealed at last year’s Pebble Beach will debut at this year’s show which starts next week.

Further supporting this is a report by last week claiming that Mercedes will be unveiling a convertible version of the Maybach 6 Concept previewing a future production car that will rival the Rolls-Royce Dawn. The video shows that the convertible concept will take its design cues from the Maybach 6 with a similarly long hood and intricate multi-spoke wheels. Unlike the ravishing red hardtop, however, it’s finished in metallic blue. We also get a brief look at the luxurious interior, which appears to be practically identical to the Maybach 6 Concept, and shares same steering wheel and gauge cluster. Chances are the Maybach 6 convertible will share the same powertrain as the hardtop, too.

If so, you can expect four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors and an 80-kWh battery pack to generate a combined power output of 750 hp. That’s enough to propel the cabriolet from 0-62 mph in around four seconds. Judging from Wagener’s comments that the new Vision concept will be an “icon for the brand,” it seems likely that it will form the foundation for an upcoming production car. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait too long to find out, as the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance commences next week on August 17.
