Having arrived in concept form back in October last year, Mercedes has finally put a date on when the production variant of the hotly-anticipated X-Class will arrive. Announced in what will likely be the first in a series of teaser videos, the Mercedes X-Class will make its world premiere on July 18. Our hopes for a twin-turbo V8 AMG-badged variant arriving in the US were dashed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, when Daimler CEO, Dieter Zetsche, confirmed the X-Class would not be offered in the US.

Built by Renault at its Argentinian plant in Cordoba, and by Nissan at its Spanish factory in Barcelona, the X-Class will compete with the likes of the Volkswagen Amarok, and initially be offered with four- and six-cylinder turbodiesel engines along with a specially-adapted 4Matic setup.

Buyers looking for a truck with aggressive styling will be pleased to know that while there are currently no plans for an AMG-powered X-Class, the premium pickup will at least be offered with AMG styling in the form of the Mercedes-AMG X-Class (previously known as AMG Sport). After engineering all traces of Nissan out of the Navara, the platform on which the X-Class is based, the German pickup is claimed to be the most sophisticated on the market, with typically crisp, and precise handling you’d expect of a Mercedes. It will also do what most people buy pickups for – carrying stuff in its bed and towing.

In that respect, the concept managed to haul 2,430 pounds in its bed and tow up to 7,720 pounds. Stylish, dynamic and tough, the X-Class appears to have all the hallmarks of a premium pickup and we look forward to seeing it in action in the coming weeks.
