Volvo's Compact XC40 SUV Will Be Insanely Customizeable

Volvo's first small premium SUV will be revealed soon.

After unveiling the XC60 at Geneva only four months ago, Volvo is : the XC40. According to Volvo, the XC40 will be revealed “shortly,” but before then we’ve been treated to the first of what will surely be many teasers in the coming weeks. But instead of showing darkened shots of the SUV's exterior like in most teaser campaigns, the Swedish automaker is focusing on the XC40's comprehensive customization options.

Volvo is aiming to bring “a vibrancy, individuality and playfulness the small premium SUV segment currently lacks,” with dozens of customization options for the XC40. For the exterior, customers will be able to choose color combinations ranging from a solid, monochromatic theme, to dual compositions in vivid colors that make the premium SUV stand out from the crowd. Interior options will deliver a “truly youthful and premium feel,” with choices including a warm Lava Orange carpet and an Oxide Red upholstery. To make the cabin even more eye-popping, a variety of trims and materials will be available with designs inspired by urban architecture and cartography.

Volvo says the XC40’s materials, patterns and color options were inspired by street fashion, city architecture, high-end designer goods and popular culture. We wanted the XC40 to be a fresh, creative and distinctive member of the Volvo line-up, allowing its drivers to put their personality in their driveway. XC40 drivers are interested in fashion, design and popular culture, and often live in large, vibrant cities," said Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Design Officer at Volvo. We’ve already been given a preview of Volvo’s new small premium SUV courtesy of the 40.2 revealed as part of the shown last year, which looked similar to the Range Rover Evoque.

No technical specifications have been released, but it’s understood that the XC40 will ride on Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture designed for small cars. Engine options will range from a 1.5-liter three-cylinder and a four-cylinder unit, along with a Twin Engine plug-in hybrid. We shouldn’t have long to wait until the XC40 is revealed, which will complete Volvo’s current SUV line-up.
