Looks like Porsche’s most powerful road-going 911 is on course to set a new Nurburgring lap record.
The new Porsche 911 GT2 RS has enjoyed plenty of publicity since its surprise reveal at E3 this year. With its 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six producing 690-horsepower and a rapid 0-62 mph time of 2.7 seconds, it’s the most potent road-going 911 Porsche has ever built, leading to speculation that it could set a new Nurburgring lap record beating the 918 Spyder. Judging from recent comments made by Mark Webber, it could even set a new all-time production car record.

Not only does it look like the 911 GT2 RS is on course to beat the 918 Spyder’s Nurburgring lap time, it could snatch the production car crown from Lamborghini. Of course, there’s more to beating lap records than straight-line speed, but the abundance of aerodynamic and weight-saving components should give it a fighting chance against the Huracan’s active aero. Now that we know the 911 GT2 RS is capable of such extreme speed, we wouldn’t be surprised if it comes close to beating the McLaren P1 LM’s record-setting time. In a previous interview, Porsche’s motorsport boss Frank-Steffen Walliser was confident that the 911 GT2 RS will set a sub seven-minute lap time at the Ring.

This is the seventh generation of the 911. It’s all about sevens… It’s 700 PS [690 hp] but it’s no seven at the Nurburgring. Wait and see. Give us some time and we will check it," he said. Time will ultimately tell if the 911 GT2 RS becomes the new king of the Nurburgring.
