When a wet track and Drift Mode meet, things can get scary and exciting.
The question remains: does drift mode compromise the sacred art of shredding tires to smithereens or does it enhance it, in the art and help proliferate its popularity across the motorized world? That’s hard to answer because either side could argue their points with validity, but if you’re the type of person who enjoys life’s simple pleasures and would rather not argue about how to have fun, then the Ford Focus RS might be for you.
Pro or amateur alike can get behind the wheel and have loads of fun, especially when the pavement underneath those four Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires is none other than the Nurburgring and the RS is switched into Drift Mode. The only thing that makes this hooning episode any different than the standard fare is the fact that the track is slick with rain.
It causes the driver of this 2.3-liter turbocharged four-banger to go sideways without the help of one of our favorite Ford modes (Baja Mode on the F-150 Raptor is pretty high on that list too), kicking its tail sideways with little help from the 350 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque going to the wheels. That sideways momentum almost gets to be a little too much for this driver at some points, but thankfully the Focus RS’ tossable chassis makes it easy to save before things get too hairy.
