And it’s coming to America first, naturally.
Back in April at the Shanghai Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the Crozz Concept, an electric crossover that will be part of its upcoming I.D. EV range to rebrand VW as a premium electric carmaker. We then saw an updated version in September at Frankfurt, and now Volkswagen has announced that an electric crossover is going into production based on the Crozz Concept which will launch in the US in 2020, most likely with a new name.

To coincide with the announcement, the I.D. Crozz Concept is also making its North American debut at this week’s LA Auto Show alongside the I.D. Buzz and the original I.D. concept hatchback. All three EVs will ride on Volkswagen’s modular electric platform that will underpin 15 EVs the automaker is aiming to launch by 2025. The production-ready I.D. Crozz will be pivotal in launching Volkswagen’s new EV range in America when it goes on sale in 2020. Volkswagen is positioning it as an affordable yet stylish electric SUV, so we’re expecting the production model to retain the four-door coupe-style looks of the concept.

It will be followed by another EV in 2022 based on the I.D. Buzz Concept that will resurrect the iconic Microbus. We’re unlikely to see an EV based on the original I.D. concept hatchback in America however, since hatchbacks typically don’t sell well in the US. In contrast, the popularity of crossovers is showing no signs of slowing down in America, and there’s certainly demand for an affordable electric SUV with a long range, so Volkswagen’s new EV could fill that void. “The I.D. Crozz-based electric vehicle will be an affordable and stylish electric SUV—and there is more to come!” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America.

“The I.D. Crozz and the I.D. Buzz will help Volkswagen to kick off an EV revolution in the United States. All of our I.D. concept cars demonstrate the inherent flexibility, driving range and smart design that can serve the needs of 21st century drivers.” Volkswagen hasn’t revealed any details about the production Crozz EV, but the concept features an all-wheel drive system that’s powered by a pair of electric motors. One is mounted on the front axle producing 101 horsepower in conjunction with a 201-hp rear motor, resulting in a combined output of 302 hp and a 311-mile range.
