Note the sarcasm above.
In case you weren’t aware, the Ford C-Max, sort of a propped up Focus with more interior space, is still on sale, although not for much longer. has confirmed with Ford that the C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid has officially ended production. Its hybrid (non-plug-in) counterpart will be scrapped as well in a few months’ time. We doubt few will care all that much. Back in 2013, Ford launched the C-Max with the intention to be compete against the Toyota Prius V as well as the regular Prius.

The C-Max didn’t make much of an impact. You see, C-Max owners quickly had complaints about the five-door’s real-world driving fuel-economy ratings; they weren’t what the EPA stated they’d be. Needless to say, these owners weren’t at all pleased with what they thought was a proper fuel efficient family vehicle. These complaints were eventually heard at Ford, which was forced to reduce the EPA ratings. Twice, for the hybrid. The C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid had its ratings reduced once, but the reputational damage was done and the C-Max lineup, at least in the US, never really recovered. We’re actually a bit surprised the C-Max Energi and hybrid lasted as long as they did.

For example, just a little over 8,000 C-Max hybrids and 7,100 or so C-Max Energi models were sold in the first 10months of 2017. The Prius, on the other hand, saw more than 90,000 of its four Prius models sold in the same period. Ford is currently in the process of reconfiguring its US lineup by moving away from small vehicles and focusing on what works: trucks and SUVs. However, the automaker is still fully committed to EVs and mobility solutions, so it’ll be interesting to see what transpires within those realms.
