Mercedes hopes new wheels and leather interior package will help shift a few models before new-gen GLS arrives.
An all-new Mercedes-Benz GLS isn’t set to arrive for another year, so the current model, which received a facelift in 2015 as well as a name change from the GL, remains the German marque’s biggest and most premium SUV in its cavalry. In an attempt to convince buyers that the GLS should be considered alongside the Range Rover and other premium SUVs, Mercedes has rolled out the GLS Grand Edition, with its name telling you exactly what to expect of the upgrade package.

Available on the GLS 350d, GLS 400 and GLS 500, the Grand Edition is made up of a 5,950-Euro Interior package and 2,300-Euro Exterior package. The latter adds a set of 20-inch black ten-spoke alloys and badges on the side of the wings. So, basically, it’s a new set of rims. The highlights of the upgraded interior are more comprehensive as the price difference signifies, with designo nappa leather seats boasting diamond quilting, brown seams and Budapest piping. An exclusive color combination of porcelain / espresso brown combine to good effect, while ambiance lighting, a unique wood trim, leather dashboard and a matching set of velour floor mats round off the ‘Grand’ package.

If this sort of thing takes your fancy, you’re out of luck as the GLS Grand Edition won’t be available until March 2018. At which point you may as well wait a few more months for the next-gen GLS, which will arrive with S-Class powertrains and the big sedan’s in-car tech including its autonomous features. There’ll also be a juicy new GLS 63 topping the range utilizing the same 612-hp 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 as the S63.
