There certainly won’t be a shortage of concept cars at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.
It’s hard to believe that the Toyota Crown has been around in Japan since 1955. Currently in its 14th generation, the Crown is long overdue a replacement since the current model was introduced in 2012. At this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota will be showing a near-production prototype of the new next-gen Crown ahead of its expected reveal next year. The biggest innovation is that it rides on the same TNGA platform as the to “offer customers the enjoyment of driving cars while pursuing a future mobility society.”
Thanks to testing at the Nurburgring, Toyota’s new flagship sedan is said to have significantly improved handling and stability. As standard, the production model will include vehicle-to-vehicle Data Communication Modules. The system will gather vehicle and traffic data, and will use this information to solve “societal problems” by “reducing traffic jams in cities.” Judging from the photos, the new Crown will take its styling cues from the Camry, with a more muscular profile, a fastback-style roof, and an aggressive front fascia with swept-back LED headlights. Measuring 4,910 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,455 mm tall, the Crown Concept is 25 mm longer and 5 mm taller than the current model.
The wheelbase is also 70 mm longer, which should provide more space for passengers. In America, the Crown’s closest equivalent is the long-running Toyota Avalon flagship sedan, but it’s possible the Crown Concept could be previewing a future replacement for the Lexus GS and ES sedans. The Lexus GS is closely based on the Crown, so it would make sense for the next-gen Lexus to be based on the new Crown too. We already know that with one model replacing both the GS and ES. Lexus will also unveil a mystery concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show, so we wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be the US equivalent of the Toyota Crown Concept.
