Jaguar Land Rover’s first ever plug-in hybrid is here.
Jaguar Land Rover's promise to electrify its entire line-up by 2020 has started now with the reveal of its first ever plug-in hybrid. As expected, the Range Rover Sport is the first model to be offered with a plug-in variant called the P400e, revealed as part of the 2018 facelift model range.
It’s powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine with 300 horsepower and a lithium-ion battery with a 13.1 kWh capacity, which powers a centrally positioned, 116-hp electric motor to produce a combined output of 404 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque.

This hybrid setup allows the Range Rover Sport P400e to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.3 seconds before topping out at 137 mph, or 85 mph when running in EV mode. Using the lithium-ion battery alone, the Range Rover Sport P400e can run solely on electric power for up to 31 miles and can be recharged in two hours and 45 minutes using a dedicated or 32amp wall box. Otherwise, it takes seven hours and 30 minutes using the standard 10 amp charging cable. The charging point is concealed behind the Land Rover badge on the right side of the grille. Land Rover claims it will achieve 84 mpg, which is impressive for a large SUV.

On the other side of the spectrum, the performance-orientated Range Rover Sport SVR has been updated with a more powerful model for the 2018 range. Its supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine produces an extra 25 hp and 15 lb-ft of torque, bringing the total output to 575 hp and 515 lb-ft of torque. This extra muscle allows the SVR to sprint to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds before reaching a top speed of 176 mph. Elsewhere, the entire Range Rover Sport range has been given some sleek styling updates with a new front bumper, a redesigned grille, and Matrix Pixel LED headlights. Airflow to cool the engine has been improved thanks to updated air vents, and the rear features a more prominent spoiler.

Rounding off the exterior changes are 21- and 22-inch alloys and a black exterior pack. Inside, the cabin has been updated with a new Touch Pro Duo infotainment featuring two 10-inch HD touchscreen displays which Jaguar Land Rover claims is the most advanced system created by the automaker yet. One intriguing new feature is the ability to use gesture control to open and close the sun visor by swiping in front of the rear view mirror if you're feeling too lazy to reach out. Also new for the 2018 Range Rover Sport range is the convenient Jaguar Land Rover Activity Key, which enables owners to open and lock doors without having to carry a key fob.
