We could see Maserati's new SUV by 2020.
Maserati was a bit late to the SUV game with the Levante, but the company is now realizing how important SUVs are for future success. The Levante has been such a sales booster for Maserati that the company now wants to build a second SUV model by 2020. Speaking to , FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne said that he'd like Maserati's second SUV to be based on the Alfa Romeo Giorgio platform, which currently underpins the Stelvio. This would be smaller SUV model to slot below the Levante in the lineup.

Even though this Maserati will be based on an Alfa Romeo platform, it will likely get its own unique engines from the Maserati brand. The Levante is currently based on the same platform as the Ghibli sedan. Marchionne believes that a second SUV model will help Maserati reach its sales goal of 70,000 to 80,000 units per year. Maserati sales rose to 36,000 units this year, up from 23,900, thanks to full availability of the Levante. Marchionne also told financial analysts on a third-quarter earnings call that this new SUV would bring Maserati's annual earnings to over one billion euros. Building a second SUV has worked wonders for Porsche, the company that basically started the sport SUV trend.

Maserati's small SUV would be a direct competitor to the Porsche Macan, as well as a more expensive alternative to an Audi Q5, BMW X3 or Jaguar F-Pace. We've been waiting for Maserati to finally stuff a V8 engine into the Levante, which should raise its appeal to enthusiasts. However, we can clearly see that this second SUV would become the company's bread and butter. After driving the Levante, we know that Maserati can offer a very unique take on the traditional SUV, so we can't wait to see what it can do at a more affordable price segment.
