Please put this into production, Honda.
Last month, we were all besotted with the cutsey Honda EV Concept at Frankfurt, a retro-inspired electric city car concept inspired by the original Honda Civic. And now it has a new sibling: presenting the sleek Honda Sports EV, which has just been revealed at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. The quirky retro-inspired design clearly takes its cues from the EV Concept, but while that car showcased Honda’s vision of a compact EV designed for the city, this new concept takes the form of a high-performance two-seater electric sports car.

Potentially, this could fill the void between the NSX and Civic Type R as a spiritual successor to the retired S2000 sports car. Honda describes the Sports EV’s styling as “a striking silhouette, friendly face and supple body surfaces, all designed to ensure the car blends into any lifestyle.” Its long and low hood evokes the designs of classic Japanese sports cars like the timeless Toyota 2000GT. The Honda Sports EV rides on the same electric platform as its EV Concept sibling, but Honda is keeping specific powertrain and performance details under wraps for now. The Japanese automaker confirmed that the Honda Sports EV Concept “combines EV performance and AI (artificial intelligence) inside a compact body."

The Honda Sports EV Concept aims to "realize the joy of driving the user can feel with a sense of unity with the car.” Chances are this is referring to autonomous driving technology like with most concept cars. Being a sports car, we would hope that it has rear-wheel drive and an option to override the self-driving tech. Will the Honda Sports EV eventually go into production? With Honda confirming that the EV Concept will go into production in 2019, since the Sports EV rides on the same platform as the EV Concept, there’s a possibility it could go into production a few years later.

According to , Honda is considering bringing back the S2000 sports car, but hasn't made any solid plans yet. “As of today, I cannot say clearly that S2000 will be reinvented as further studies are necessary,” said Honda boss Takahiro Hachigo at the Tokyo Motor Show. It would certainly make sense, as Honda has already reinvented the Civic Type R and NSX. “I’ve already heard many voices expressing they’d like a next-generation S2000. Honda development engineers are quick to develop sporty cars if the requests are there. All over the world – in Japan, North America, Europe, China – more and more voices are expressing the desire to reinvent S2000."

However, it has not matured yet," he continued. "It’s not time yet. We need time to decide if S2000 is reinvented or not. If the sales people investigate, look at it and they’re really enthusiastic, maybe we look at it.”
