The off-roading behemoth will finish production later this month.
It’s the end of an era, as Mercedes-Benz has announced that its off-roading behemoth, the G500 4x4 Squared, will be finishing production for good later this month. First unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in concept form as a follow-up to the even more extreme 6x6 variant, it’s without a doubt the toughest and most capable G-Wagon SUV money can buy, not to mention one of the most expensive Mercedes vehicles on the market with an astronomical asking price of $274,544.

There is a much cheaper alternative however, as GTSpirit recently announced a detailed scale model replica of the G500 4×4 Squared. In contrast to conventional rigid axles, the G500 4x4 Squared comes with portal axles that give the off-roader a ground clearance 17.7 inches which is twice as much as a standard G500, enabling it to tackle extreme terrain. Adding to its aggressive appearance are massive 22-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 325/55 R22 tires which increase the width of the tracks by 11.7 inches compared to the regular G-Class. Powering the menacing Mercedes off-roader is a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine with 422 horsepower.

After the “phenomenal response” to the concept’s reveal at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes put the G500 4x4 Squared into production and started selling it in dealerships in December 2015. While the 6x6 was built in limited numbers, the G500 4x4 Squared is classed as a series production model but Mercedes is now only accepting orders until the end of October. Its discontinuiation doesn’t come as a surprise, since Mercedes is gearing up to reveal the next-generation G-Class which will finally ride on a new platform when it launches in 2018 to coincide with the SUV’s 40th anniversary.
