Purists win this one.
Right, so just because there’s an M4 convertible doesn’t mean BMW plans to offer a drop top version of its all-new M2. Why’s that? Because, in the words of M2 chief engineer Frank Isenberg, "convertibles are not for racetracks, they’re for cruising." Damn right. Speaking to CarAdvice, Isenberg not only made it crystal clear an M2 convertible is a no-go, but also that : "We’ve got such a nice M235i Convertible." Isenberg was also in charge of M235i development, so we can honestly take him at his word here.
But the guy also fully understands what the M2 is all about: "We need to keep it as purist as we did with the 1 Series M Coupe." The M2 is for those who want to use it for some serious track time. The M235i, both the coupe and convertible, will also feel at ease on a track, "but you wouldn’t choose it for a track day." However, we wouldn’t totally rule out the possibility of an even more purist M2 variant. Remember the M4 GTS? An M2 GTS would be epic.
